Liberia Launches Supervision Mission for EU-Funded Electrification Project in Southeast

On Monday, March 24, 2025, the Government of Liberia launched a supervision mission in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, to oversee the progress of the European Union-funded “Light Up the Southeast” (LUSE) Project.

The delegation included Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Hon. Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, and the EU Ambassador, among others.

The high-level team visited the CLSG Buchanan Substation, which was energized in 2021 and is equipped to evacuate power to Buchanan and surrounding counties. TRANSCO CLSG Liberia’s Country Manager, Jerry T. Taylor, led the facility tour, accompanied by TRANSCO CLSG Engineer Mohammed Sow and Health, Safety and Environmental Assistant Varney Conneh.

The LUSE Project, backed by a US$43 million grant from the EU secured by the Government of Liberia, aims to electrify Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Greenville, Sinoe County, and Barclayville, Grand Kru County, by the end of 2026.

The Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) of Liberia is the executing agency for this initiative.
